Biography

It started as a hobby
One of his first cameras drowned while he and his unit were crossing a swollen creek in South Viet Nam.  Another was damaged during a combat assault by helicopter.  He was not a photographer.  His military specialty was infantry and photography was only a hobby.

It would grow to be much more.   For the past 38 years Master Photographer Ed Tilley has been answering photographic challenges for local and national clients; mostly on location.

Experience came first and fast
Beginning in 1969, Tilley learned the importance of organization & discipline while employed at the largest daily newspaper in South Carolina.  Often he experienced two & three photo deadlines a day as the paper published its five morning and afternoon editions.  For seven years, assignments ranged from presidential visits to garden club socials, spot news to sports and weather related feature requests to illustrating the booming building industry.  These diverse and fast paced assignments quickly honed his ability to work with people effectively and capture the picture that told the story.

Then college
In 1975 Tilley was accepted to attend the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) located in Rochester, New York.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Photography in 1979.  During these four years, he gained the technical foundation he missed during his photojournalism days.

Immediately after college, employment at a large portrait studio in Canton, Ohio continued his professional growth as he learned portrait photography from the studio owner who was a Master Photographer.  While at the studio, Tilley stayed involved with photojournalism shooting sports and high school yearbook work as well as social event assignments throughout the community.

A new business is born
In 1984 Tilley opened "Ed Tilley - Photographer", a Canton, Ohio based business, and began targeting architecture and commercial/ industrial assignments while continuing with commissioned portrait and social event work.

Ed Tilley earned the "Master Photographer" degree in 1987 and the "Photographic Craftsman" Degree in 1990 from the Professional Photographers of America.  He was awarded the "Certified Professional Photographer" rating with the Professional Photographers of Ohio in 1982.

Professional associations
Tilley quickly learned the power of networking with peer professionals soon after graduating from RIT.  Throughout the past 38 years he has belonged to no fewer than eight professional associations.  The list includes:  the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), the Ohio North Coast (ONC) chapter of ASMP, Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the American Society of Photographers (ASP), the Professional Photographers of Ohio (PPO), the Triangle Photographers Association (TPA), the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), and the Certified Professional Photographers of Ohio (CPP).

The opportunity to give back
He has served on the board of directors for the PPO & the Ohio North Coast (ONC) ‘Cleveland’ chapter of the ASMP and was chairman of the Ohio CPP Commission.  He is a past president of ONC and currently continues to serve on the board of directors of TPA where he is also a past president

From his peers
Images from his social event, architectural and commercial work have earned him many national merits with the PPA, Court of Honor awards at the PPO and twice the coveted Kodak Gallery Award.

Special interests
For the past 3˝ years Tilley has been a frequent volunteer builder with Habitat for Humanity of Stark and Carroll counties.  Flying left seat at the controls of a single engine Cessna 150 or Cessna 172 as a student pilot is among the top ten things he enjoys when not creating photographs.  Tilley has been studying both the spoken and written forms of the Japanese language for many years.   Bicycling on his vintage Schwinn bicycle he purchased with paper-route money in 1959 still occupies some of his warm-weather free time and annually he pedals, on average, in excess of 300 miles.  Traveling with his girl friend, throwing a great party and kicking back with a few shots of Wild Turkey “101 or better” round out this decorated Viet Nam era Purple Heart recipient.
